Not to mention, you might also need tooth replacement if you’ve lost one or more teeth. Your restorative dentist can repair a tooth or replace those that have been lost with a dental crown and/or bridge. Your newly restored smile can last for a decade or longer before needing to be replaced. Here’s how long you can expect your bridge or crown to last, and a few helpful tips to protect your investment.

What are Crowns & Bridges?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap bonded over the entire portion of a tooth above the gum line. It’s one of the most widely used treatments in restorative dentistry because it’s versatile. A crown can be used to repair several issues, like large areas of decay or significant breaks. Now, they also have a commonplace is cosmetic dentistry because they are made of all-ceramic material to look natural. This makes them a suitable solution to cover dark tooth discoloration or improve the shape of an abnormal tooth.

A crown is often used along with other treatments as well, like a bridge. 1 to 3 consecutive missing teeth can be replaced with a bridge. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth to recreate the teeth you’ve lost. It’s then secured in place by bonding dental crowns over the adjacent teeth.

How Long will My Crown or Bridge Last?

Although crowns and bridges aren’t made of metal, they are durable to withstand the pressure of regular use, like chewing. They are proven to last for several years. In fact, a 2009 study found they have over a 90% success rate to last for at least 5 years. Research also shows they have a 50% to 80% chance of thriving for 15 to 20 years with the right care.

How Can I Care for My Crown or Bridge?

Your crown and bridge require daily care to prevent unnecessary complications. You can help to ensure your new smile lasts by keeping a few tips in mind:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste.
  2. Floss your natural teeth and around your restorations daily using a high-quality floss.
  3. Wear an athletic mouthguard if you play sports.
  4. Don’t chew overly hard or sticky foods.
  5. Don’t use your teeth as tools.
  6. Don’t chew on inedible objects.
  7. Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup.

Enjoy a Healthy, Beautiful Smile

You don’t need to let damaged or missing teeth impact your oral health or your quality of life. You can rebuild your smile with a crown or bridge. Rest assured, your restorations will look and feel natural.
